“Marissa Andrade, CMHC – Reunification Therapist Who Permanently Broke Our Family If you’re looking for a licensed therapist, reunification counselor, or were court-ordered to attend therapy in a custody-related case, please read this carefully before working with Marissa Andrade, CMHC, currently practicing in Utah. It has been a few years since we worked with Marissa, but the long-term damage she caused to our family is irreversible. We were assigned to her during a high-conflict custody situation involving my husband’s teenage children. The kids made false claims to avoid visitation—claims that were disproven in court PRIOR to starting with her. We weren’t looking for punishment. We simply wanted support. We asked for professional help to restore trust and rebuild the relationship between my husband and his children. Unfortunately, Marissa Andrade made that impossible. From the very beginning, she showed clear bias. Instead of acting as a neutral, trauma-informed reunification therapist, she took sides, treated my husband as if he were guilty, and dismissed any efforts toward healing. Despite court rulings clearing him of the accusations, she continued to act as though he was the problem. At one point, she directly told my husband that if he didn’t comply with what she said, she would tell the court he was unfit and that he would never see his children again. She weaponized her authority and used fear and control as leverage—not therapy. My husband, who had never been in therapy before, came out of every session shaken and emotionally wrecked. Concerned by what I was hearing, I sat in on one of the Zoom sessions. As someone with a background in psychology myself, I was absolutely appalled by what I witnessed. Marissa was manipulative, invalidating, and degrading. She did not create a safe therapeutic environment. She twisted his words, dismissed his emotional experience, and reinforced a false narrative that further alienated him from his children. The power dynamic was completely unbalanced, and what should have been healing turned into emotional abuse masked as therapy. We all know that teenagers can be dishonest—especially at that age. That’s precisely why reunification therapy exists: to uncover truth, rebuild trust, and reestablish connection. Instead, Marissa encouraged the children to continue avoiding accountability and even told them directly that they didn’t have to talk to their dad at all. Now that the children are no longer minors, we still have zero relationship with them. We reach out regularly—almost daily—and get nothing in return. They’ve also completely cut off their step-siblings. Our blended family is shattered. We stayed quiet for years out of fear. But now, with no relationship left to protect, it’s time to speak up—so no other family has to experience what we went through. What Marissa Andrade did was not reunification therapy. It was coercion, emotional manipulation, and a complete misuse of power. Remember you have the option to file formal complaint with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) and encourage others who have experienced harm under her care to do the same. Please think twice before trusting Marissa Andrade, CMHC, with your family’s future. Therapy should heal—not destroy. To be clear, this is not a reflection of LifeStance Health as a whole. Our experience with Marissa Andrade occurred prior to her employment there. However, LifeStance deserves to know the kind of therapist they’ve brought onto their team. And to anyone currently seeking therapy—especially in sensitive family or custody-related situations—please do not entrust your care or your children to Marissa Andrade. Our family is still heartbroken over the years we’ve lost with our children, and we wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone else.”
